Onboarding

This guide is public so you can understand how Prompt It works before installing the browser extension.

Quick start (1 minute)

Install the Prompt It browser extension.
Open Manage Promptlets and paste your OpenAI API key.
On any webpage: select text → right-click → choose a Prompt It action.

That’s it. You stay on the page, and the result appears in the extension panel.

What Prompt It does

Prompt It adds AI-powered actions to your browser’s right-click menu. You select text, right-click, and choose an action (called a promptlet) such as summarising, rewriting, translating, or transforming text.

Prompt It sends only the selected text to OpenAI’s API using your API key, then shows the result without you leaving the page.

How it works

You select text on any web page
You right-click and choose a Prompt It action
The selected text is sent to OpenAI’s API using your API key
The AI response is returned and shown to you

Prompt It does not run a background service or maintain a server of its own.

API key setup

Prompt It requires you to provide your own OpenAI API key.

Create an API key via platform.openai.com
Paste the key into the Prompt It extension settings once
The key is stored locally in your browser
The key is used only to make direct requests to OpenAI’s API
The key is never sent to any other server

You remain in control of your usage and costs.

Privacy and data handling

Prompt It does not collect or store any of the following:

browsing history
selected text
prompts or AI responses
usage analytics or telemetry

Processing happens locally in your browser and remotely only at OpenAI when you run an action.

Troubleshooting

I don’t see “Prompt It!” in the right-click menu.
Make sure you have selected text on the page (Prompt It only appears when text is highlighted).
It says my API key is missing.
Open Manage Promptlets, paste your key, and try again.
I get an OpenAI error.
Check your API key is valid, and that your OpenAI account has API access/billing set up.
The output looks wrong.
Try a different action, or create a custom promptlet that matches the kind of text you’re working with.
