Help & User Guide

Practical tasks for Prompt It! Start with Getting Started if you have not installed the extension or saved an API key.

Run an action · Manage promptlets · Import and export · Studio · Local data

Run a promptlet on selected text

Select text on an ordinary webpage, right-click, open Prompt It! and choose an active promptlet. The result appears in the side panel when the request completes.

The Copy button copies the output. Review generated text before using it; an action called Verify is not a guarantee of factual accuracy.

Edit output and apply another action

In the side panel, choose Edit to refine the output. Clear empties the editable text; Undo restores the edit snapshot. Choose Done to finish editing.

Choose Apply and select another promptlet to process the current output. This is sometimes called chaining: each step is a separate request, using the text passed to it.

Create, edit and organise promptlets

Open the extension menu and choose Manage Promptlets.

Import and export promptlets

Import: download a promptlet pack. In Manage Promptlets choose Import, then Choose File and select the .pi file. Review the preview and naming conflicts, select the promptlets you want, then choose Import.

When a name already exists, the preview shows a new unique name for the imported copy. Check those names before confirming. Importing does not overwrite the existing promptlet.

Export: choose Export in Manage Promptlets. Export all custom promptlets or select particular ones, enter a filename and choose Export. Built-in promptlets must first be cloned to a custom copy to be exported.

If a file is rejected, check the error and try downloading it again. Keep imports under 5 MB. Exported files can contain your own instructions and text: inspect them before sharing.

Work with typed text in Studio

Open the extension menu and choose Studio. Type or paste into the input pane, then choose a promptlet from the sidebar. Read the result in the output pane.

Copy Output copies the selected output text, or the whole output when no text is selected. Apply runs another promptlet on selected output text, or on the whole output when nothing is selected.

Studio saves input and output locally. See the clearing instructions below before using sensitive text.

API key and model settings

Follow Add your API key, including the Save API Key step.

The promptlet editor exposes Model, Prompt Mode, Temperature and Max Tokens under its advanced options. Temperature is unavailable for models that do not support that setting. Available choices in the extension do not guarantee access through your API account.

Local persistence and clearing data

Closing Studio does not clear its saved text. When Studio contains text, its Clear control empties both input and output and saves those empty values. The control becomes Undo, which can restore the cleared text while that Studio page remains open. Close that page after clearing if you do not want its in-memory undo copy to remain available.

Clearing Studio does not delete your API key, promptlets or preferences, and does not erase requests already sent to OpenAI. It is not a secure-erasure operation. See the Privacy Policy for temporary execution state and diagnostic logging.
