Getting Started

Set up Prompt It! and run a reusable text action in Google Chrome.

1. Before you start

You need an OpenAI Platform API key and an API account able to make requests. Check your API billing or available credits before using Prompt It! A ChatGPT subscription does not pay for these API requests.

2. Install Prompt It!

Open the Prompt It! listing in the Chrome Web Store and add the extension to Chrome. Open Chrome’s Extensions menu to find Prompt It!; pin it if you want its icon on the toolbar.

3. Add your API key

  1. Open Prompt It! from Chrome’s Extensions menu or its toolbar icon.
  2. Choose Manage Promptlets.
  3. Find the OpenAI API Key field and paste your key.
  4. Choose Save API Key. Wait for the saved confirmation before trying an action.

Enter the key in the extension, not on this website. Do not share it in screenshots or support messages.

4. Run your first promptlet

  1. Open an ordinary webpage and select a short passage, such as the library example.
  2. Right-click the selection, open Prompt It!, then choose Summarise.
  3. The result appears in the side panel when the request completes.

Chrome’s internal pages and the Chrome Web Store may restrict extension actions. Use a normal webpage for your first try.

5. Understand where your data goes

Your API key, promptlets and preferences are retained locally in your browser. Studio also saves its input and output locally so you can return to them.

Running an action sends the text being processed, the promptlet’s instructions, applicable system instructions and relevant request settings to OpenAI. Your key authenticates that request. See the Privacy Policy for local clearing, temporary execution state and third-party processing.

6. Troubleshooting and further help

Missing key
Open Manage Promptlets, enter your key and choose Save API Key.
Invalid key or insufficient permissions
Check that the saved key is correct, has not been revoked and permits the required API requests in your OpenAI project.
Billing, credits or model access
Check API billing and available credits in OpenAI Platform. A ChatGPT subscription does not cover these calls. Confirm that your API project can use the selected model.
Missing context-menu action
Select text on an ordinary webpage. Check that Prompt It! is enabled in Chrome and the promptlet is Active in Manage Promptlets. Refresh the webpage and try again.
Unexpected output
Review the selected text and promptlet instructions. Try a more specific action, and check the result before relying on it.
